The RCM operates as a toll refiner, which means it does not buy the gold it refines. Instead, gold mining companies provide their dore bars in exchange for credits in a shared gold pool. Whitmore emphasizes, “We never actually take ownership…those credits are owned by a community of stakeholders who own a share in our gold pool.” This model allows the Mint to maintain a strong position in the market, ensuring liquidity and accessibility for investors.
The Impact of Silver Premiums on Investors
As silver prices have surged, the Royal Canadian Mint has faced challenges regarding premiums over melt values. Whitmore notes that the market’s dynamics have shifted, with some mints reportedly down 80% due to an influx of secondary products. He explains, “When the price of metal goes up really fast, it causes a lot of people to come out of the woodwork and start liquidating their metal to crystallize some of those profits.” This influx can impact the premiums and margins for newly minted coins.
