Leigh Veidman is the Head Coach of Spokane Velocity FC, a rapidly rising franchise in the USL League One. From Liverpool Grit to the American Pitch
Veidman’s resilience was forged on the unforgiving streets of inner-city Liverpool. Growing up in a single-parent household in an environment dominated by posturing and street fights, his options were stark: football or boxing. Choosing football, he earned a life-changing opportunity to travel to the United States for the Dallas Cup, ultimately securing a scholarship to Iowa Western Community College.
However, his transition to the American Midwest was a brutal wake-up call. Treating the opportunity as an extended party rather than a professional stepping stone, Veidman failed his classes and lost his scholarship. Sent back to the bleak economic realities of Liverpool during the 2008 recession, he was forced to confront his own immaturity. An anonymous community grant provided him another opportunity to return to the U.S., offering a rare second chance. Veidman seized it with grit, ultimately earning an exercise science degree and pivoting his unfulfilled playing dreams into a relentless pursuit of coaching.
Building the Spokane Velocity
Veidman’s coaching trajectory is a study in surviving a volatile market. He endured the sudden collapse of his first pro coaching gig at Fresno FC and the unexpected hiatus of the OKC Energy. Unfazed, he utilized those setbacks to sharpen his operational playbook, executing a massive turnaround as an assistant with the Charleston Battery before taking the helm at Spokane.
Current Ventures & Philosophy:
- Expansion Franchise Execution: Tasked with building the Spokane Velocity FC roster and culture from scratch in 2024, Veidman led the expansion club to back-to-back playoff finals in its first two years, delivering a highly entertaining, blue-collar brand of soccer that resonates deeply with the local fan base.
- People Before Players: Veidman’s contrarian leadership philosophy demands understanding the psychological background of every individual in his locker room. He believes that maximizing athletic ROI requires managing the whole person, evaluating how they handle stress, and fostering deep internal trust.
- Shaping the Next Generation: Beyond his club duties, Veidman serves as a Coach Educator for U.S. Soccer.
