Amaryllis Gryllaki

Managing Director - Head of Precious Metals at Wells Fargo

Amaryllis Gryllaki is the Commodity Sales Director at Wells Fargo. This profile follows her journey from a childhood in Greece to navigating the global financial crisis as a young analyst at Citibank in London. Discover how she rose through the ranks of bullion banking at Deutsche Bank, TD Bank, and Scotiabank before relocating to Houston, Texas, to build a precious metals franchise from the ground up for Wells Fargo.

Who is Amaryllis Gryllaki?

In the complex and traditionally male-dominated world of bullion banking, Amaryllis Gryllaki stands out—for both her expertise and her unconventional path into the industry. As the Commodity Sales Director for Wells Fargo, based in Houston, Texas, Amaryllis is tasked with building and expanding the bank’s precious metals franchise from the ground up. She specializes in market mechanics, helping corporate clients navigate metal financing, contango, and geopolitical supply chain risks. On Y’all Street, we recognize Amaryllis as a true global operator who combines high-level financial strategy with the resilience of a seasoned backcountry hiker.

From Athens to Wall Street

Amaryllis’s journey is defined by constant motion and intellectual curiosity. Born in Greece, she moved to the American Midwest at age six, navigating between cultures before eventually earning her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and her master’s from City University of London.

She didn’t plan on a career in commodities; her original goal was to join the intelligence community. However, a successful interview with Citibank landed her in London just before her 21st birthday. She found herself running a precious metals settlements team right as the 2008 Global Financial Crisis hit, watching from her Canary Wharf office as Lehman Brothers collapsed across the street. She used that period as a turning point–earning her master’s degree at night while transitioning from operations into high-stakes sales at Deutsche Bank. When her division was suddenly eliminated, she pivoted to New York, rising to VP roles at TD Bank and Scotiabank, mastering the physical and paper sides of the metals trade.

Building the Bullion Desk

When the pandemic shifted the landscape of corporate America and Scotiabank unwound its metals franchise, Amaryllis saw an opportunity to leave New York. She accepted a mandate from Wells Fargo to build a new precious metals division in Houston, Texas, leveraging the bank’s balance sheet to serve an untapped commercial market.

Current Ventures & Philosophy:

  • Bullion Banking Mechanics: Amaryllis specializes in structuring metal financing solutions, enabling companies–from oil refiners to jewelry makers–to use physical metal as collateral, often securing financing rates lower than those for traditional cash loans.

  • Risk Management: She guides corporate clients through market volatility, helping them hedge against supply shortages, backwardation, and the threat of international tariffs.

  • Mentorship & Diversity: As a leader in recruitment at Wells Fargo, she actively advocates for bringing more women into the commodities sector, encouraging young professionals to embrace risk and step into fast-paced environments.

  • The “Type 2 Fun” Mindset: Outside the trading floor, Amaryllis is an extreme hiker (Kilimanjaro, Death Valley, Torres del Paine). She approaches physical challenges—like completing a 52-mile unplanned trek in Virginia—with the same calm, problem-solving resilience she applies to the markets.
