Richard Rawlings

Founder of Gas Monkey Garage

Read the biography of the Gas Monkey Garage founder, entrepreneur, and media personality. Learn how Rawlings transitioned from a Texas firefighter and printing press owner to building a multi-million-dollar direct-to-consumer automotive lifestyle brand, starring in Discovery Channel's Fast N' Loud, and pioneering the modern creator economy.

Who is Richard Rawlings?

Richard Rawlings is an entrepreneur, brand builder, and the driving force behind Gas Monkey Garage. As the founder of Gas Monkey Garage and the breakout star of Discovery Channel’s hit series Fast N’ Loud, Rawlings transformed a regional custom car shop into a globally recognized automotive lifestyle brand. Known for a bold “watch this” approach to business and marketing, he successfully bridged the gap between raw, grease-under-the-fingernails car culture and high-level corporate IP scaling. On Y’all Street, we recognize Rawlings not just as a television personality, but as a brand builder who understands a fundamental truth: if you want to sell products, you must first build and own the audience.

From the Paper Route to the Pavement

Rawlings’s entrepreneurial instincts were forged in Fort Worth, Texas. Starting at age seven, he worked a 3:30 a.m. newspaper route with his father, learning early lessons about work ethic and responsibility. By age 12, he was spotting and flipping classic cars in his neighborhood.

His early twenties were defined by high-stakes risks and hard lessons. Before he could legally buy a beer, Rawlings was working simultaneously as a police officer, firefighter, and paramedic in Coppell, Texas. In 1992, he survived an off-duty shooting during an attempted carjacking. Realizing the rigid pay scales of civil service couldn’t match his ambitions, he quit his secure job, spent his entire 401(k) on a road trip out West, and briefly found himself completely broke, with his Jeep repossessed. That rock-bottom moment catalyzed his business career. He pivoted into corporate print sales, quickly became a top-tier broker, and eventually bought and scaled his own printing company—learning the fundamentals of margin, equipment depreciation, and B2B marketing.

Gas Monkey Garage & The D2C Pivot

In 2003, Rawlings sold his printing business to pursue a new vision: building a family-friendly, nationally recognized automotive lifestyle brand that could rival the biggest names in the space. He bought an 18-wheeler, wrapped it in Gas Monkey branding, and aggressively marketed himself at car shows nationwide.

Current Ventures & Philosophy:

  • The Media Engine: Rawlings spent eight years shooting his own sizzle reels and knocking on Hollywood doors before landing Fast N’ Loud in 2012. The show became one of the most-watched automotive programs in the world, broadcasting in over 100 countries.

  • IP Ownership & D2C: After parting ways with Discovery, Rawlings brought his intellectual property entirely in-house. He canceled third-party licensing deals to capture higher margins, opting to sell directly to his 20+ million social media followers.

  • Portfolio Diversification: The Gas Monkey brand now spans apparel, Garage Beer (an equity partnership with the Kelce brothers), a forthcoming proprietary tequila brand, a coffee subscription service, and international restaurant licensing.

  • The Gas Monkey Foundation: Leveraging his success to give back, Rawlings actively supports first responders, veterans, and Alzheimer’s research.
