Who is Henry Yoshida?

Henry Yoshida is a serial fintech entrepreneur who is reshaping how Americans invest for retirement. As the Co-Founder and CEO of Rocket Dollar, Yoshida gives everyday investors the ability to unlock their IRAs and Solo 401(k)s to invest in alternative assets, including real estate, private equity, precious metals, and cryptocurrency. On Y’all Street, we recognize Yoshida for his ability to spot the gaps that Wall Street incumbents ignore. Having successfully built and exited two major financial firms (including an acquisition by Goldman Sachs), Yoshida blends big-bank expertise with the scrappy, risk-taking mindset of a true Texas founder.

From the Restaurant Floor to Wall Street

The child of Japanese immigrants who spent their careers in the Dallas restaurant industry, Yoshida had no early exposure to corporate finance or retirement planning. His parents’ grueling work ethic instilled in him a drive to build a life outside the service industry.

After earning his degree from the University of Texas at Austin, Yoshida landed a role at Merrill Lynch in August 2000, stepping straight into the dot-com crash. Realizing the prestigious “finance” job was actually a ruthless sales gig, Yoshida survived by out-thinking the competition. Instead of cold-calling elusive millionaires, he forged B2B partnerships with payroll representatives, incentivizing them to direct small business 401(k) plans to him. This gritty, grassroots approach saved his job and turned him into a retirement plan expert over his decade at the firm.

Market Impact & Entrepreneurial Strategy

Realizing that the large brokerage firms had little interest in modernizing small-business retirement, Yoshida left the safety of Merrill Lynch to build his own path. He launched a Registered Investment Advisory (RIA) firm that grew to $2.6 billion in AUM (later acquired by Captrust). He then founded Honest Dollar, a mobile-based retirement platform, by hiring Sir Mix-A-Lot for a fake launch party at SXSW to attract venture capitalists. The company was acquired by Goldman Sachs in 2016.

Current Ventures & Philosophy:

  • Rocket Dollar: Yoshida’s current venture targets the $34 trillion U.S. retirement market. Because companies now stay private much longer than they did in the 1990s, everyday investors are missing out on exponential growth. Rocket Dollar solves this by allowing individuals to easily invest tax-advantaged retirement funds into private and alternative markets.

  • The “Checkpoint” Theory of VC: Yoshida views venture capital like an arcade racing game. Every round of funding is a checkpoint; the faster and more efficiently you hit milestones, the more “time” (capital) you get to reach the next stage.

  • Risk Tolerance: Inspired by Jeff Bezos’s “Regret Minimization Framework,” Yoshida believes that the ultimate failure is reaching age 80 and wondering “what if.”
