He discovered wrestling by chance at age 11 when a coach intervened in a schoolyard fight and invited him to the mat. Despite academic struggles early on, Cormier’s relentless work ethic propelled him from junior college to Oklahoma State University, where he became an NCAA runner-up. He then represented the United States in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, serving as team captain—a testament to his natural leadership.
After the crushing disappointment of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where kidney failure forced him out of competition, Cormier pivoted to mixed martial arts at age 30.
