Who is Brent Johnson?

Brent Johnson is the CEO of Santiago Capital, a wealth management firm known for its contrarian and highly accurate macroeconomic analysis. He is best known across the global finance community as the creator of the “Dollar Milkshake Theory,” a macroeconomic framework that correctly predicted the sustained strength of the U.S. dollar despite record national debt and inflation. On Y’all Street, we recognize Johnson as a true independent thinker, a former Wall Street insider who walked away from the safety of major banks to build a firm grounded in intellectual honesty and client alignment.

From Nebraska to Wall Street

Johnson’s worldview was shaped by his “small town roots and big-time dreams” in Nebraska, where he obsessively read the local newspaper to understand global events. A collegiate basketball player at the University of Kansas and Rockhurst, his initial ambition was politics. However, a disillusioning senior-year internship in Washington, D.C., prompted a hard pivot into international business.

After graduating from Thunderbird School of Global Management, Johnson secured a highly coveted role in the private client group at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ) in New York, eventually moving to San Francisco just in time for the dot-com crash. When DLJ was acquired by Credit Suisse, Johnson spent the next nine years managing high-net-worth portfolios. But the 2008 Global Financial Crisis was his professional crucible. Realizing that major banks often prioritized firm revenue over client protection, Johnson left his “dream job” at Credit Suisse, walked away from a massive retention check, and struck out on his own to build an independent wealth management firm.

Santiago Capital & The Milkshake Theory

Johnson initially founded Santiago Capital as a side business focused on providing clients with physical gold solutions outside of traditional ETFs. Today, it serves as his primary vehicle for managing private funds and separate accounts.

Current Ventures & Philosophy:

  • The Dollar Milkshake Theory: Johnson’s defining thesis argues that despite America’s fundamental economic flaws, the U.S. dollar acts as a “milkshake straw,” sucking up global liquidity during times of crisis because it remains the “best of all bad options” compared to the Euro, Yen, or Yuan.

  • The Eurodollar Market: He emphasizes the massive, often misunderstood Eurodollar market (dollars held offshore), which creates constant, structural demand for the U.S. currency to settle international debts.

  • The New Macro Paradigm: Johnson believes the 50-year era of globalization, focused on corporate efficiency and profits, is dead. The new era is defined by deglobalization, national security, and robustness, requiring a completely different investment playbook.

  • Media & Education: He is the co-host of the highly popular Milkshakes, Markets, and Madness podcast, offering weekly insights to a global audience.
